The question of how Santa gets down the chimney is perhaps one of the world's most baffling mysteries. For years, academics, scientists, moms, dads, and generations of children have pondered the question. Oh, there are many theories. Some people wonder why Santa doesn't just use a door like anyone else. The short answer is tradition, a 1500-year-old tradition started by old St. Nicholas who was known throughout the ancient world for giving gifts of gold to those who were less fortunate. St. Nicholas would secretly give his golden gifts by placing them...down the chimney. Hence, old habits die hard for Santa. Of course, if you don't have a chimney, there are many other ways for Santa to visit your home. |
NORAD scientists believe they have discovered how Santa gets down the chimneys. Based on flight profile configuration data gathered from 44 years of NORAD's radar and satellite tracking of Santa Claus, the scientists have concluded that Santa probably stands about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs approximately 260 pounds. From cockpit photos that NORAD has occasionally been able to take of Santa over the years, we know he has a generous girth (belly), rosy cheeks from sleigh riding in cold weather, and a flowing white beard and hair. Santa does not appear to age. A photo taken in 1959 appears to be almost identical to an image taken last year. Based on the data we have gathered during the past 44 years, NORAD believes it has figured out how Santa gets down the chimney. |
